QatarTESOL 2009 Conference Call of Paper Extended
CLILS seems to be the buzzword of the day in ELT circles these days. What do we mean by it? In the British Council publication English Next , David Graddol wrote that CLIL is "an approach to bilingual education in which both curriculum content (such as science or geography) and English are taught together. It differs from simple English-medium instruction in that the learner is not necessarily expected to have the English proficiency required to cope with the subject before beginning study." (Graddol, D. English Next. British Council Publications, 2006) Whether you know it as Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), Content Based Learning (CBL), English for Special Purposes (ESP), or another acronym, English language teaching and content can be successfully linked. Here in the Gulf, as reforms take place in the education system, many teachers are faced with students who are learning content through English. We'd like to hear what approaches you're using in the classroom to deal with this situation. All educators are faced with trying to have the most impact per instructional hour, or getting the most bang for your buck, was we would say in North America. How are you helping your students to achieve success? The Qatar TESOL Conference Committee is looking for proposals which address these issues.
